2001 AFTI Media Boy Poll

Top 10 Media Boys - 2001

The 2001 AFTI Media Boy Poll started on January 6, 2002, and ended on February 3, 2002, at 9pm eastern time.  Fans around the world were invited to vote via the Internet for their favorite young male performers based on their work during the year 2001.  Eligible nominees must have been a part of a production (either in the movies, TV, or music) that had first run original status in any part of 2001, and 17 years of age or younger in any part of 2001.  Voters were able to vote for their 5 favorite performers, with their #1 favorite receiving 5 points, their #2 favorite receiving 4 points, and so on.  Voters were also given the option to include up to 5 additional "Honorable Mention" names on their ballot.  These Honorable Mentions did not earn points but gave additional recognition to some great young stars.

Around 400 young performers were nominated to be 2001 AFTI Media Boy, from world-wide superstars to boys who may have only appeared in a TV commercial or a game show.  Well over half of the boys received some type of recognition by the voters in the 2001 AFTI Media Boy Poll.

Thanks to all the many devoted fans on the Internet, this was the most successful Media Boy Poll in its' 6-year history!  This year 359 ballots were included in the voting, more than tripling the amount of last year's 103 ballots.

We're happy to say that there were no ties in the Top-10 for this year, each Top-10er solidly earning his place at the top of the list.  Our most sincere congratulations to ALL the stars who earned points in this year's Poll, and especially to the Top-10 stars.

Billy Gilman

Country Crooner Billy Gilman makes it to this year's Top-5 with 233 points!  Billy was also last year's #5 star in his debut on the Media Boy Poll.  Billy's "Dare To Dream" CD, released in May of 2001, his appearance on the celebrity kids week on "Hollywood Squares", and his aggressive touring schedule all helped keep Billy as one of our favorite media boys of 2001!

"The Little Prince of Pop" Aaron Carter finished this year's Poll with 259 points at #4, his best showing ever in the Poll!  Airboy not only gave his fans another CD ("Oh Aaron"), laid down some tracks on the CD soundtrack for "Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius" and toured this year, but we also got to see him on TV in "Lizzie McGuire", "Sabrina the Teenage Witch", and "In Concert with Samantha Mumba".  Aaron also appeared live in "Suessical the Musical" in NYC, April 4-May 13, 2001.  Also in 2001, "Aaron's Party - Come get It" was certified double platinum, he won the award for "Favorite Rising Star" on the 2001 Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards, and was nominated for "Choice Male Performer" at this year's Teen Choice Awards.  Aaron was last year's #10 in the Poll, #12 in 1999, #5 in 1998, #21 in 1997, and #69 in 1996.

A well-deserved honor at the #2 spot goes to Jesse McCartney of Dream Street with 279 points.  2001 marked Jesse's finale as J.R. in "All My Children", which brought us some amazing performances by a young actor, and brought Jesse an Emmy nomination.  Jesse also continued singing with the "Sugar Beats".  A brilliant actor, a multifaceted singer, a dancer, Jesse is a true Media Boy!  Jesse ranked at #7 in last year's Poll, a big jump from his #105 debut in 1999.
